While Asheville-based producer Interstitia (the working name of Graham Scala, who also contributes to bands like Bleach Everything and US Christmas) has been crafting frenetic psychedelic electronic textures across the space of multiple albums his new single “Hiraeth” offers a more subdued and minimal approach than anything else in his back catalog. Deriving its title from a Welsh word referring to a longing for a specific place the track juxtaposes the soft hiss of degraded ambient texture with gentle ambient synth and haunting loops that emerge then disappear into the sonic fog, creating an atmosphere more evocative and ethereal than any of its predecessors. The first in a series of upcoming releases, “Hiraeth” continues Interstitia’s trajectory away from any sort of expectation or preconception.
