Taking its title from the earliest stage of hermetic alchemy in which the subject is exposed to a heat - either literal or metaphorical - that burns away imperfections so that the larger work of refinement can begin, Interstitia’s third full-length “Calcinatio” takes the approaches present on his rapidly expanding body of work to new extremes. The solo project of Graham Scala (who also performs in Bleach Everything, US Christmas, and Collapse Culture amongst other projects), Interstitia has pushed outwards at the edges of psychedelic sound design since 2018, crafting a sort of punk ambient out of distorted techno polyrhythms, celestial synth atmospheres, and noise-inflected granular synthesis processing. Scala’s work moves past the purely cerebral inclinations which characterize so much experimental music, instead opting for a visceral, bracing, and constantly evolving series of paeans to the violence of self-knowledge and the turbulence of spiritual development. Though “Calcinatio” operates in a similar vein as previous Interstitia releases, Scala developed all of the album’s component elements to their densest, brightest peaks and formed them into a whole vastly greater than the sum of its parts.
